Renting a Dump Trailer in Johnson County: What Fits and What You Can Tow
A roof tear-off, a deck demo, a basement gut, or a fall yard cleanup all end the same way: a pile of heavy debris sitting in your driveway that has to go somewhere. One way to move it is a dump trailer you tow yourself.
You load it when you have time, haul it when it is full, tip the bed at the landfill, and bring it back. For a lot of jobs around Olathe that is a simple way to work, but only if two things line up: the material has to fit under the weight rating, and your truck has to be able to pull it.

What the 7x14 dump trailer is
It is a 14 ft long by 7 ft wide trailer with a dump bed, rated at 14,000 lbs GVWR. The trailer itself weighs about 4,000 lbs empty. It rides on dual axles with brakes on both, and it comes with slide-out ramps so you can walk a wheelbarrow or drive a mower up into the bed instead of lifting everything over the side.

Weight runs out before space does
This is the part that surprises first-time renters. Whether you fill the box or not has almost nothing to do with what you are hauling. Dense material stops you well short of the rim, and light material fills the box while you still have rating to spare.
Roof shingles, dirt, landscape rock, sand, and broken concrete are all in the first group. On a tear-off or a rock haul you will reach the 14,000 lb rating with the bed only part full, and that is the correct place to stop. Brush, fencing, drywall, cabinets, deck boards, and general construction debris are in the second group. Those fill the box long before weight becomes the limit.
Load to the weight rating, not to the rim. An overloaded trailer stops badly, wanders in crosswinds, and puts you over the legal rating of the trailer and your truck. If you are hauling shingles, dirt, rock, or concrete, plan on two trips instead of one heavy one. If you are not sure how heavy your load is, ask the landfill or the quarry to weigh you and use that number next time.
How to load it so it tows straight
Put the heavy material over the axles, not at the tail. A load stacked behind the axles lightens the tongue and starts the trailer swaying at highway speed. A load shoved all the way forward puts too much weight on your hitch and squats the back of the truck. Center of the bed, spread evenly side to side, is what you want.
Use the slide-out ramps for anything with wheels. A mower, a walk-behind, or a loaded wheelbarrow goes up far easier than it goes over the side, and you are less likely to bang the sidewall doing it.
Before you dump, look up. Dump beds swing high, and a raised bed under a tree limb or a power service drop is how people wreck a trailer and a lot more than that. Pick a flat spot, chock the trailer, and give yourself clear sky above the bed.
Your truck and hitch have to match
A 14,000 lb GVWR trailer is not a half-ton and a 2 in. ball job. You need a truck rated to tow a loaded weight in that range, a 2-5/16 in. ball on a properly rated hitch, and a round 7-pin connector so the trailer brakes and lights work. Brakes on both axles only help if your truck can actually control them, so a working brake controller matters here.

When the machine has to come too
Plenty of cleanups need more than a bed for debris. If you are bringing a skid steer, a mini excavator, or a tractor to the same job, the dump trailer is not the tool. Both are 2-5/16 in. ball, bumper pull, round 7-pin, so if your truck is set up for one it is set up for the other. We rent both to customers in Overland Park and Lenexa, and either one can be booked online.
What a multi-day cleanup actually costs
The dump trailer is $150 per day or $900 per week. Six days at the daily rate comes to $900, the same as the weekly price, so the week is worth booking at six days or longer. For anything shorter, the daily rate is the cheaper way to go. Sales tax is added at checkout, and returning on time keeps you clear of late fees.
A lot of tear-offs and demo jobs run about three days: load and haul on day one, finish the detail work on day two, and make a final dump run before you bring it back. At the daily rate that is $450 for the stretch, and the trailer sits in your driveway on your schedule.
Picking it up in Olathe
We are open 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week, so you can grab the trailer before the crew shows up and bring it back after the last load of the day. We are family owned and operated out of Olathe, serving the Kansas City area, including Shawnee and Lawrence.
Bring a valid driver license and proof of insurance. Rentals are paid in full at booking. Cancellations made 48 or more hours before pickup receive a full refund, and cancellations inside 48 hours are subject to a 25% fee.
